Meet some of our Special Constables
Our Special Constables come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and the work they get involved in varies on a shift by shift basis.
SC Barnaby Taylor
I am a composer by day and create music soundtracks for films and documentaries. I employ musicians which can vary form 2 musicians up to an 80 piece orchestra. My day job can be quite stressful and solitary when I am composing and I am often in the studio for long hours.
Becoming a Special Constable gets me out in the local community and working as part of a team and meeting new people. It's definitely changed my perspective on where I live and how society functions and the role of the Police. It has given me a great sense of purpose and solidarity and I am lucky to work with brilliant colleagues.
SC Pascoe
In my day job I am an agricultural account executive, looking after insurance policies for tractors, quad bikes, farms and livestock. I have been a Special Constable for just over 2 years now.
I have always wanted to join the police even from a young age. At the age of 18, I made the best decision and applied to be a Special Constable. I love being a Special Constable as it opens your eyes to the world, especially as a young adult and allows you to develop skills you never you knew you had.
No two days are the same. It is rewarding to know you are making a difference to someone's life in their time of need.
SC Evans
For the last 40 years I have worked as a front-line operational engineer with the Royal Navy and the RNLI. I felt it was time to 'come home' to my family and I've been able to dedicate more time to my Special Constable role.
I applied to become a Special Constable because I have time to give and I believe I have the life skills and experience to make a significant contribution to help make a difference in the community.
It's a great feeling knowing that something you did helped someone on possibly one of the worst days of their lives. I'm very proud to be a Special Constable and would recommend it wholeheartedly.
Melissa Lai-Hung
I am a Health & Safety Inspector by day and work for the Health And Safety Executive. I carry out proactive inspections as well as investigations where there have been serious incidents in the workplace.
I have always been passionate about volunteering and joined Devon & Cornwall Police as a Special Constable in 2020. It is a very rewarding role and I feel valued as a part of the Police family. I enjoyed meeting people in the local community and engaging with those who may not have had any involvement with the Police before. No shift is ever the same from assisting with missing person searches to supporting victims of domestic abuse.
I am really proud to volunteer in this role, assisting on the front line with support from amazing colleagues.
