Julie, Rural Mounted Volunteer:

Hello everyone.

My name is Julie. I am 54 years old. I have two grown up girls and the pleasure and pride of two grandchildren.

I joined Dorset Police in 1997 as a special constable, I served as a special constable for 18 years, during this period I was part of the Safer Neighbourhood Team. I have also spent a little time attached with the Traffic Team, "No Excuse". I then joined volunteering for the Positive Action Team. During my years of policing I also became a paid Detention Officer. When I saw the launch of the Rural Mounted Volunteer Riders I knew I had to apply for this. Having horses, this was an ideal opportunity for me to link both the joy of riding and to carry on volunteering in another new role working alongside colleagues.

My horses are called Spice who is 27, and Prince aged 4. I use my friends horse Clover who is 14 for longer hacks as she is perfect for this role being young and fit. Clover has done many show events, and dressage.

I do love the fact that I can add my life experience with the years I have spent as a SC and a horse rider. I can help and support our local community as well as promote and provide positive community engagement and prevent rural and wildlife crime by working alongside the Rural Crime Team whilst enjoying my time with the horses.

Claudio, Safe Bus Volunteer:

I have been a Safe Bus volunteer for six years. The work largely involves talking to people who are vulnerable through drink or mental health, and occasionally to homeless people who come over and say hello.

It has been an eye-opening experience for me as Bournemouth at night-time is very different to Bournemouth during the day.
