To apply to become a Police Support Volunteer, you need to meet the following criteria:
- You need to be over the age of 18
- You must have resided in the UK for at least the past 3 years
- You will need a National Insurance Number
Unfortunately, some roles or professions will prevent you from becoming a police volunteer for Dorset Police and Devon & Cornwall Police, as there could be a conflict of interest.
These are as follows:
- Police and Crime Commissioneer employees
- Magistrates/Clerks to the Justices/Clerks to the Courts
- Probation Officers/Bailiffs/Warrant Officers
- Liquor licence holders/Licensed premises managers (and their spouses)
- Licencees of betting/gaming establishments
- Private detectives/enquiry agents
- Security officers/guards/door staff
- Custody officers/custody escort officers
- Serving members of HM Forces
Yes – full training will be provided with regular review sessions to see how you are settling in.
No – all our volunteers, staff and officers are treated the same.
No—as a volunteer, you will not be paid. However, we do not want you to be out of pocket, so you will receive reasonable expenses as required.
Yes – we would be happy for you to get involved with multiple roles.
All our roles require vetting checks, and in addition to this you will be required to complete a DBS check if you are applying for the role of Cadet Leader.
References will be sought for a period of 5 years. You will be asked to provide details of employment or education for the past 5 years. If you have been in neither employment or education for the past 5 years, a personal reference will be requested as an alternative.
Our teams will fully support you through the application and onboarding process, and you will receive a mentor once you are in the role.

Yes - if you require a support worker/carer this can be facilitated by the Force.
Please note that for security reasons, there will be pre-requisite checks required for the support worker/carer as well as the individual applying to volunteer. These will include vetting and references for the past 5 years.
